Addison-Wesley Abbreviation Topic Maps visualization Topic maps - the new ISO standard ISO-IEC 13250 - provide a bridge between the domains of knowledge representation and information management. Topics and topic associations build a structured semantic link network above information resources. Our research aims at visualizing this semantic layer efficiently, which is a critical issue as topic maps may contain millions of topics and associations. This paper is divided into 3 parts. First, we depict briefly basic topic maps concepts. Then, we review a few graph visualization techniques. Finally, we describe the visualization tool we developed at the Laboratoire d'Informatique de Paris 6 and study how this tool may be used - and enhanced - for topic maps visualization. Identities And Names In Knowledge Management This paper presents a concise investigation and classification of the nature of identities and the role of names in knowledge management solutions. Identities and names, while being the very foundation upon which knowledge management solutions are built are also the least clearly explained and understood. This leads to a conflicting and often inconsistent use of identity and naming in any given solution. As we move towards integrated knowledge management solutions, identity has an even greater role to play in providing consistency and forming bridges between knowledge models. We begin this paper with a study of the different aspects of identity including 'thing identity', 'The Scope and Granularity of things to be identified', 'Assigning meaning and Published Identity', 'Identity Assignment and Resolution' and 'Identity Structure'. The next section introduces the idea of names and illustrates how they are different from identities. Throughout this paper we provide syntactic examples of the ideas discussed using several standards, including RDF and TopicMaps. We conclude this paper with a discussion about how identity and names could evolve and what future role they may expect to play in knowledge management solutions. Dynamic Publication Through Content Structure Management Tools Dynamic publication has become a strong requirement in environments where content flow is important and need for customized organization of information is critical. Financial organizations use both expert produced documents (tax, legal, financial) and commercial documents about their products. The overall documentation is used in different contexts, for different purposes, using several formats. Managing 'content structures' in a repository independent from the content itself can significantly improve content publication process, reusability of content itself, and accurate, customized dynamic publication. We'll show on an use case of assets management documentation how a clear separation from 'Content' and 'Content Structures' can be used to allow every actor in the information chain to create new structure patterns, as well as new documents, and finally deliver completely customized documentation to the end users. We'll show how RDF and Topic Maps standards enable this crucial segmentation between reusable content and content structures. We'll show how 'content structure management' tools feet into content management architecture with portals, content management systems, and content authoring tools. We'll show how separate management of 'content structure' open the way to a new family of content management tools such as 'content intelligence tools', 'content organization authoring tools'. Graham Moore Topic Maps for application data structures Vendor Alexander Johanessen Connecting XML, RDF And Web Technologies For Representing Knowledge On The Semantic Web : In order to represent knowledge for it to be usable web-wide and in interoperable ways, it should be done using well-known, and the most appropriate web technologies. These include the XML family of standards and the Resource Description Framework (RDF). RDF is a metadata format that uses a directed, labeled graph structure, URIs for identifiers, XML for its its syntax, and a simple type and class structure for recording schema information. RDF can be used with many XML technologies such as XML Namespaces, RELAX NG, XML Schema, XSLT and has relationships to others such as XTM, XPath, XQuery, SQL and relational databases. When these technologies are used, the knowledge has to be described in web-wide concepts which are usually provided in what are variously called schemas, ontologies, thesauri or vocabularies. These vocabularies can include general ones such as the Dublin Core, ones from particular communities, from existing controlled vocabularies and new ones for particular purposes. These need to be able to be mixed and matched, discovered and new concepts understood (if only partially) in order that relationships between the concepts can be made. These methods and forms are the technological basis of the Semantic Web idea. This paper describes how these technologies are best used together, their relationships and where each of them can be appropriately applied. This is done using examples of how they are being used in different applications, communities and industries. The ongoing development of the mentioned standards is also be explained. Michel Biezunski Sam Hunting Real World Applications of Topic Maps Since the adoption of the topic map ISO standard in 2000 and the release of the XTM specification earlier this year, topic maps have gotten a great deal of attention. The concept has been billed as the be all, end all for knowledge organization and representation. Battles between topic maps and RDF zealots have broken out, with each touting the strengths and advantages of their individual schemes. However, through the din, a common question has arisen from users: "This sounds cool, but what can I use it for in my organization?" Several topic map vendors and architects have developed example topic maps in order to demonstrate the power of the topic map paradigm. However, in most cases, these applications are merely toys and not of much use in a commercial enterprise. They also deal with topics (no pun intended), such as genealogy and music, which are often difficult to map to real-world applications. If potential users are unable to bridge the chasm between the examples and their own potential uses of the paradigm, they are rarely willing to risk dwindling corporate resources to field even a pilot program. In keeping with the conference theme "What Really Works", this paper will present a real-world application of the topic map model in use at a real company. The application includes a parts management system and IETM . The paper will discuss the application and highlight the successes and challenges encountered in designing and implementing the system. AsTMA? AsTMA? XML Tools Topic Map Topic map of free XML software maintained by Lars Marius Garshol. Description Consultancy Consultancy An organisation providing consultancy services. XML Topic Maps And Technical Information Systems On first glance, the TM (Topic Map) paradigm appears to be an attractive way to handle the complex structures in which technical information is created and used. A contemporary Technical Information System consists of database items, external files or BLOBS, and an application that knows the meaning (semantics) of all items. TMs offer a way of describing the semantics in the data itself, to build up a self-explaining knowledge store. TMs promise easy integration with TM-based knowledge bases from other sources, technical or not. They also promise generic support for terminology management, semantic search capabilities, inferencing and other useful features. However, challenges are plentiful. Due to the vast amount of information and the needs of the users, Technical Information Systems place high demands on the stability of the underlying software, as well as on its performance. It is not obvious that TMs are suitable to store the structures underlying technical information. The advantages of TMs may be purchased with new disadvantages. This paper is based on the diploma dissertation of Mario Klesse, which was written under supervision of the author, to investigate the usefulness of TMs for Technical Information Systems. Both agree that TMs can be used to describe the information structures, but that the technology is ? at the time of writing the thesis ? not yet mature enough for productive use.
