Papers and Publications
This section is intended to contain links to as many of Techquila's published works as is possible. It is broadly divided into two parts - papers (many of which are free) and publications (most of which are not free).
Papers
-
TopicMapster - Peer To Peer Topic Maps
- A paper about the development of a peer-to-peer platform for topic map sharing. The principle focus of this paper is on the sharing mechanism which transfers topic map "fragments" between peers on the network. This paper was first presented at XML Europe 2003.
-
Topic Map Patterns For Information Architecture
- Discusses how a variety of standard information structures from the domain of information science can be represented in topic maps. Also includes a description of PSI sets for thesaurii, site maps and facetted classification schemes.
-
A Practical Introduction To Topic Maps
- A paper which introduces the basic constructs of topic maps and their representation in the standard XML Topic Maps (XTM) 1.0 syntax.
-
A Proposal For Extending Scope In XTM
-
This paper outlines a proposal for an more prescriptive treatment
of the concepts of scope and what it means for a characteristic
assignment to be valid. The document goes on to propose the means
by which this approach to scope might be encoded in an XML document.
-
Topic Maps - The Business Case
- This paper presents real-world case studies of the application of topic maps.
-
Developing A Topic Map Programming Model
- An argument for the development of a standard topic map API with some approaches to such an API developed and compared.
-
Topic Maps for Repositories
- An early paper on the potential application of topic maps as the data structure for representing the organisation of information within a repository such as a content management system.
Publications
Techquila currently has contributions to three books in print - two in
the Wrox Professional series and a third book from Addison Wesley. Click on the covers to jump to the Amazon page for the book.
Professional Java XML
|
|
This book covers a wide range of XML technologies with an emphasis on practical use with Java code. It covers basic things such as JAXP, TraX, SAX 2.0 and JDOM; web-service related things such as UDDI and WSDL; and meta data related things such as RDF and Topic Maps. Techquila's contribution in this book was the code examples in the chapter "Semantic Documents". |
Professional XML Meta Data
|
|
This is a more focussed book - concentrating on XML technologies related to meta data. Again, RDF and Topic Maps receive a fair amount of coverage as does XML Schema. Techquila's contribution to this book is the chapters "Meta data architectures" and "Processing Techniques for Meta Data".
|
XML Topic Maps
|
|
Covers XML Topic Maps (XTM) at both a practical tutorial level and
also presents a number of theoretical perspectives on the subject of
topic maps and topic mapping. Techquila's contribution is a tutorial
on the use of TM4J and can be found in the chapter on open-source
software.
