Pepys-Map : 22nd - 26th December 1661

A catch up over the christmas period, with entries posted for 22nd to 26th of December.

One point worth noting is that the PSIs I am using for dates are based on the Gregorian calender, meaning that they roll over from December 1661 to January 1662 in this period. I am using the "common" convention of the new year starting on January 1st, rather than the ecclesiastical year start.

Pepys-Map : 19th - 21st December 1661

Three more entries posted.

For 19th December 1661, the following events are modelled:

  • Elizabeth sits for Mr. Savill. Samuel attends the sitting and his participation is modelled using the 'audience' role type.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth travel home from Mr. Savill's by coach.
  • During the coach ride, the couple have an argument.
  • Samuel dines with William Warren at the Dolphin.
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • Samuel returns home from the office.

For 20th December 1661, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel dines at the Wardrobe.
  • Samuel and Henry Moore meet William Swan in the street.
  • The trio go drinking at a local tavern during which they discuss religion. This is modelled as two separate events, a drinking event and a discussion with the discussion occurring during the drinking.
  • Samuel and Henry Moore go to the Royal Exchange.
  • Sameul discusses maritime law (or as Pepys puts it 'Dominion of the Sea') with Henry Moore .
  • Samuel returns home.
  • Samuel reads more of Selden's Mare Clausum.

Finally, for 21st December 1661 we have:

  • Samuel discusses the ending of Privy Seal business for the duration of the Christmas holidays. The discussion is with Sir John Robartes and takes place at his chambers in Whitehall Palace.
  • Samuel visits a Mrs. Sarah and Mrs. Betty at Sir Edward Montagu's lodgings at Whitehall Palace.
  • Samuel drinks with a group of civil servants ('Exchequer men') at the Dog.
  • Samuel has a discussion about maritime law with Edward Falconberg.
  • Samuel meets William Prior (of Brampton) at Thomas Pepys' house.
  • Samuel returns home by coach.
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office. We know that both Sir William Penn and Batten are present at the office too as they complain about Pepys' frequent absence!
  • Samuel writes letters from his home.
  • Samuel reads more of Selden's Mare Clausum.
  • Also occurring today was the christening of John Hunt - an event that was attended by Elizabeth Pepys.

Pepys-Map : 15th - 18th December 1661

Four entries posted today - although all are relatively short entries.

Events for 15th December 1661 are as follows:

  • Samuel attends morning service at St. Olave.
  • William Penn dines with Pepys at his home.
  • Samuel attends the afternoon service at St. Olave.
  • Elizabeth argues with her maid, Nell.
  • Samuel reads Grotius' Mare Liberum and Selden's Mare Clausum. These two texts are modelled as topics as are their respective authors.

For 16th December 1661:

  • James Bollen visits Samuel Pepys at home.
  • Bollen and Pepys travel by coach to the Wardrobe to call on Henry Moore.
  • Bollen, Moore and Pepys travel on to Chelsea to the home of the Privy Seal, Sir John Robartes.
  • Bollen, Moore, Pepys and Robartes attend to Privy Seal business.
  • Elizabeth Pepys visits Elizabet Hunt (this takes place while Samuel is working).
  • Samuel, Elizabeth and Sarah dine at Sir Edward Montagu's lodgings. I have assumed that "Sarah" refers to Elizabeth's maid.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth attend a perfomance of 'Cutter of Coleman Street' at the Opera.
  • The Pepys return home by coach.

For 17th December:

  • Samuel visits Mr. Savill to view the progress on his portrait.
  • Samuel is called to work at the Privy Seal (this is simply modelled as a working event).
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • Samuel has supper at home.
  • Samuel reads more of Selden's 'Mare Clausum'.

For 18th December:

  • Samuel works at the Navy office.
  • Elizabeth sits for Mr. Savill.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth dine with Jemima Montagu. I have assumed that the location referred to by Pepys as "Lady Sandwich's" is the Montagu's main London residence.
  • Samuel and his brother Thomas visit Jane Turner.
  • Samuel returns to the Montagu's.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth return home.

Pepys-Map : 13th - 14th December 1661

Two more entries posted today.

In the entry for 13th December 1661, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel dines at home.
  • Elizabeth Pepys sits for Mr. Savill's portrait while Samuel watches. Samuel's role is modelled using the 'audience' role type.
  • The Pepys return home.
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office with Penn and Batten.
  • Pepys, Penn and Batten drink at the Steelyard (a merchants area in the city) and are joined by Elizabeth Batten and John Cox. This is all modelled as a single drinking event.
  • There is some musical performance during the group's time at the tavern. This is modelled as a performance event, but we are not told who is the performer or what is performed. The drinkers in the previous event are all assumed to have been audience to the performance.
  • Samuel returns home by coach.

The entry for 14th December 1661 is quite short and only the following events are modelled:

  • Sameul and Elizabeth dine at home.
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • Samuel returns home from the office.

Pepys-Map : 12th December 1661

In the entry for 12th December 1661 the following events are modelled:

  • William Bowyer and John Gregory visit Samuel at his home.
  • Pepys, Bowyer and Gregory go to the Dolphin for their morning draught.
  • Samuel dines with Lady Montagu and Sir John Crew at the Wardrobe.
  • Samuel goes to Westminster in search of Sir John Robartes.
  • Pepys and Robartes work on Privy Office matters.
  • Pepys visits William Penn at his home.

In the course of writing up today's topic map, I discovered (thanks to my birthday present to myself of the L&M Companion volume) that I have made a couple of errors in the interpretation of the diary.

Firstly, "The Wardrobe" is most likely a reference to the headquarters of the Kings Great Wardrobe which was off Puddle Dock Hill and not in Wardrobe Court. Secondly, Pepys frequent business with the Lord Privy Seal is as a result of him acting as deputy for Sir Edward Montagu who holds the position of clerk in the Privy Office. So in fact, when Pepys works with the Lord Privy Seal, it is more likely on Privy Office business than on Navy business.

To address the first issue, I have created a new topic representing the headquarters of the Wardrobe at Puddle Dock Hill. The second issue raises the problem of the names of certain events which may be misleading. There is also the issue of making retrospective changes to the entries made so far. My feeling is that the best way to do this is to consolidate the entries into a single topic map and then use either tolog or a TM4J application of some sort to manipulate topics as required. More thought is needed on this.

Pepys-Map : 7th - 8th December 1661

The first entry covered today is for 7th December 1661 and requires the introduction of a new event type. The events modelled are:

  • Captain Ferrers and Emmanuel Luffe visit Samuel Pepys at home.
  • Emmanuel Luffe plays Samuel's theoboro (modelled as a performance event).
  • Ferrers and Luffe breakfast with Pepys.
  • When they leave, Samuel and Elizabeth discuss purchases for Elizabeth.
  • Meanwhile, Ferrers and Luffe have a run-in with some watermen at Tower Stairs. This is modelled as a conflict event that occurs during Samuel and Elizabeth's discussion event.
  • During the fight, Emmanuel Luffe receives a head wound. This is modelled as a new type of event - an injury event. The injury event type is subclassed from the health event type. Emmanuel Luffe is modelled as the injured party (a role subclassed from patient).
  • Luffe returns to Seething Lane and Elizabeth treats his wounds (the travelling event is implied).
  • Henry Moore and Samuel Pepys visit Ned Montagu at Worcester House but are unable to see him. This is modelled as a visit to Worcester House.
  • Pepys and Moore dine at Wilkinson's cookhouse.
  • Samuel works at the Privy Seal.
  • Samuel travels to the Navy Office by boat.
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • Captain Holmes arrives at the Navy office and he talks to Samuel. Amongst other things, Samuel hears of Holmes' opinion of Sir John Minnes. This is all modelled as a discussion event that occurrs during the preceding working event, with John Minnes as the subject of the discussion.
  • John Cox visits Samuel at the Navy Office.
  • Samuel returns home and writes a letter to his father. Again the travelling event is implied in the change of location for this event from the preceding event.

For 8th December, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel receives a letter from William Smallwood, conveying Tom Trice's answer to Pepys' Chancery bill. This is modelled as a correspondence event between Smallwood and Pepys with the subject of the event being Pepys' Chancery bill.
  • Samuel dines at the Wardrobe with Lady Montagu.
  • Lady Montagu tells Samuel of the christening of William Rumbold's son Charles. The christening itsel is also modelled as a separate event.
  • Thomas Pepys (the brother) visits Samuel at his home.

Pepys-Map : 6th December 1661

In the entry for 6th December 1661, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel meets friends at Westminster hall.
  • Samuel and friends drink wine at The Dog.
  • Samuel, Penn and Batten dine as guests of George Carteret at his lodgings in Whitehall Palace. According to L&M, this would be the lodgings granted to Carteret by his position as Vice Chamberlain, hence the location topic is named "Lodgings of the Vice Chamberlain". The lodgings are not within the confines of Whitehall Palace as shown in L&M, but are instead in the Great Court which adjoins the palace.
  • Signing of a contract. This is a charter granted to the East India company by the Crown. Pepys only says that the East India Company is represented by "govenors", but there are no names nor any numbers. For now I have only modelled the people that we know to be present (Pepys, Penn, Batten and Carteret as witnesses). The charter itself is modelled as an item (in the artifacts topic map) and is made the subject of this event and of the following discussion event.
  • A discussion with the King. Pepys, Penn, Batten and Carteret have a discussion with the King and the Duke of York in the Kings Closet. The Kings Closet is part of Whitehall Palace and so its location is modelled using a located-in relationship.
  • Samuel and the others return to Carteret's lodgings to complete their business. This is modelled as a working event.
  • Samuel speaks with the Lord Privy Seal in the Council Chambers. This is also modelled as a working event. Again the Council Chambers are a part of Whitehall Palace.
  • Pepys returns home by coach with Penn and Batten.

Pepys-Map : 3rd-5th December 1661

Three more topic maps posted today covering the period from 3rd to 5th December 1661.

Events modelled for 3rd December 1661

  • Samuel sits for Mr. Savill
  • Samuel visits the Wardrobe
  • Samuel and Henry Moore go to the Temple to work on Pepys' legal business. I have assumed here that this is the Chancery bill against Tom Trice.
  • Samuel dines with Lady Montagu and Lady Wright.
  • Samuel travels to the Navy Office by boat.
  • Sam returns home.

Events for 4th December 1661:

  • Samuel travels to Whitehall with Williams Batten and Penn. Samuel reports seeing the body of a man who drowned the previous day. This is recorded as a separate death event.
  • Samuel goes to the Temple to deal with the surrender of Sturtlow.
  • Samuel and others dine at the 3 Tuns.
  • After dinner, Sam takes a boat to Cheapside to meet his wife at Mr. Savills. This gives us evidence for the location of the painter's workshop which is now recorded as being on Cheapside.
  • Elizabeth sits for Mr. Savill.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth return home by coach.

Events for 5th December 1661:

  • Samuel sits for Mr. Savill
  • Samuel and William Batten work on Navy business at the Treasury Office
  • William Batten dines at home.
  • Batten returns to the Treasury Office.
  • William Penn dines with Pepys at his home.
  • Penn, Pepys and his wife travel to the Opera by coach.
  • Penn travels on to Whitehall by coach.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth attend a performance of Hamlet at the Opera.
  • The pair visit Jane Turner at her home.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth return home.

Pepys-Map : 2nd December 1661

Although short, the entry for 2nd December 1661 results in quite a few separate events.

  • An initial sequence in which Samuel goes to Mr. Savills; finds him out; meets Henry Moore on the way home and the pair then return to Seething Lane. This results in the following sequence of events in the topic map:
    • Samuel travels from Seething Lane to Mr. Savills place of business.
    • Samuel travels from Mr. Savills place of business and stops at some unamed place en-route to his home.
    • Samuel meets Henry Moore that the unamed place where the previous travelling event ended.
    • Samuel and Henry Moore travel from the meeting point to Pepys home.
  • Pepys and Moore talk at Pepys home.
  • Henry Moore dines with Samuel Pepys.
  • Henry Moore takes his leave to do some work at the Lord Privy's office. This is modelled simply as a working-event taking place at the Lord Privy chambers with Moore as the worker.
  • Clement Sankey and Mary Archer call on Samuel Pepys at home.
  • All three go to the Opera by coach.
  • A performance of 'The Mad Lover' attended by Pepys, Clement Sankey and Mary Archer.
  • Clement Sankey and Mary Archer dine with Pepys at his home.

You might notice that in some cases the travelling has been modelled in more detail than in other cases. For example, Sam's return home from Mr. Savill is modelled as having two legs, but this is in some way necessary to model his meeting Henry Moore (the alternative being to simply model the meeting with Moore as being an event that occurred during the journey from Savill's to Pepyp's home). On the other hand the trio of Clement Sankey, Mary Archer and Samuel Pepys must have travelled *back* from the Opera in order to participate in the final dining-event at Pepys' home, however I have chosen not to model this particular travelling event at all as the fact that they all changed location can be deduced from the location of the performance event and the subsequent dining event and we have no additional information (such as mode of transport) to convey.

This question of the level of detail of the modelling is something that occurs in many places in the work on the diary. Another good example is the modelling of event sequencing. Right now there is an implicit event sequencing that uses sort names for the events so that they sort into (approximately) chronological order. A more explicit way to model this would be to specify the start and end points of events relative to each other (e.g. event A starts after event B). At the moment, the choice to not model this information is a question of balancing the additional manual effort against the additional information conveyed. Some helpful tooling could quite possibly change my mind...

Pepys-Map : 30th November 1661

Final entry for November. The following events are modelled for 30th November 1661:

  • Samuel works on legal matters with Lewis Phillips and Dr. John Williams at the Temple. I have assumed that this work is to do with Pepys' Chancery bill against Tom Trice and so have made that the subject of the working-event.
  • Samuel dines at the Wardrobe.
  • Samuel travels home from the Wardrobe.
  • Pepys works at the Navy Office.
  • Pepys, Batten and Cocke drink a bottle of sack at the Navy Office.
  • Pepys returns home from the Navy Office.
