Pepys-Map : 29th-30th October 1661

For 29th October 1661 the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • The Lord Mayor's Feast is held (but Samuel and his colleagues don't go)
  • Samuel dines with Williams Penn and Batten
  • The three men drink together at the Dolphin tavern.

In addition, the investiture of the new Lord Mayor, John Frederick, is recorded as the start of an office-holding-event in the topic map of people in the diary.

For 30th October 1661 the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • At home, Sam plays on his newly repaired theoboro.
  • Samuel walks to Deptford with Captain David Lambert.
  • At Deptford, Samuel is shown around a ship called The Norwich. This is modelled as a visiting-event, with the ship itself being the visited thing.
  • Samuel returns home from Deptford
  • Samuel pays a call on William Batten and stays to play cards with Lady Elizabeth Batten and Martha Batten.

In addition, the news related by Samuel in his diary that Sir Henry Vane and John Lambert are taken as prisoners from the Tower to the isles of Scilly is recorded as a travelling-event involving those two individuals.

Pepys-Map : 25th - 28th October 1661

Four more entries posted today.

The events modelled for 25th October 1661 are:

  • Samuel goes to Whitehall Palace. We are not told how or for what reason, so only a travelling event is modelled.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth dine with Jemima Montague at the Wardrobe.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth attend a performance of 'Love and Honour'.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth meet Elizabeth Pearse and Mrs. Clifford in the street.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth walk home via George Hunt's shop where Sam checks on the repairs to his lute.
  • Samuel chastises Will Hewer for showing a lack of respect to him and his wife.

For 26th October the modelled events are:

  • Henry Mordaunt and George Carteret visit William Penn and Samuel at the Navy Office.
  • Samuel and William Penn attend a performance of 'The Country Captain' at the Theatre Royal.
  • Samuel receives news of the death of Robert Slingsby. The death is modelled as one event and Samuel's receipt of the news as a separate event.
  • Samuel and William Penn drink at the Mitre.

For 27th October:

  • Samuel attends church at St. Olaves where he and Penn and Batten discuss Slingsby's death.
  • Samuel dines at home.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth attend church at St. Olaves.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth dine with William and Mary Wight.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth return home from the Wights'.

Finally, for 28th October:

  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.
  • Samuel dines at home.
  • Samuel retrieves his repaired lute from George Hunt, paying 29s. for it. This event is modelled as new annotations on the original repair event created for 9th October 1661. We add the end date for the repair, an occurrence recording the price as 29s., and add a participation association that has George Hunt playing the role of 'repairer'.
  • Samuel, Robert Ferrers and a friend of Ferrers' go to a performance of Argalus and Parthenia at the Theatre Royal.
  • The three men then go drinking at the Ringo Alehouse.
  • Samuel purchases a belt from a belt-maker that he sends for from the alehouse.

Pepys-Map : 23rd-24th October 1661

Two more entries posted today.

In the entry for 23rd October 1661, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel breakfasts with William Penn and Daniel Tresswell at Tresswell's lodgings in Whitehall.
  • Samuel dines with William Penn at the Leg tavern in King Street.
  • Samuel and Penn take a coach to the Lord Privy Seal's home in Chelsea.
  • Samuel and Penn discuss business of Penn's with the Lord Privy Seal. Is this the same business as referred to in the entry for 21st October 1661 ? It is not clear from the entry, so I have not set an event subject for this event.
  • Samuel attends another performance of 'Love and Honour' at the Opera.
  • Samuel visits Robert Slingsby at his home.
  • Thomas Holliard calls on Robert Slingsby while Sam is there. It seems from the entry that Holliard might have offered medical advice to both Pepys and Slingsby, but there is nothing concrete to model.

In this day's entry, Samuel also mentions that the workers at the Navy Office have been invited to the Lord Mayor's dinner. At present I am not sure of the best way to model this. It could be a form of correspondence event, although the way it is described I think that it might be second-hand news received from Slingsby (who is Sam's boss at the Navy Office). I've flagged this as a TODO in the LTM topic map for today.

The entry for 24th October 1661 is modelled as follows:

  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.

  • Samuel dines with Peter Llewellyn. We are not told where (perhaps at the Pepys' home ?)

  • Samuel visits Robert Slingsby at his home.

Pepys-Map : 21st-22nd October 1661

Entries for 21st and 22nd October posted today.

Events modelled for 21st October:

  • Samuel takes a coach with Henry Moore to Sir John Robarte's house in Chelsea, but find him not at home.

  • Sam and Henry Moore have breakfast (cake and ale!) with John Pargiter at some unknown location.

  • Samuel goes to the Lord Privy Chambers and there has a discussion with William Penn about some business of Penn's.

  • Samuel dines at the Wardrobe.

  • Sam attends a performance of William Davenant's "Love and Honour" at the Opera in Lincolns Inn Fields.

  • Sam travels home and once there does some work before retiring.

For 22nd October, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel works at the Navy Office.

  • A deputation from the Duke of York visits the Navy Office. To model this, I have created a new topic type for a group of people. We are not told who is in this particular group, nor if they specifically visit Samuel. For this reason I have simply modelled the event as the group visiting the Navy Office.

  • Samuel visits Robert Slingsby who is suffering from a fever. The illness is modelled as a separate event that is known to have started on or before this day.

  • Samuel visits his aunts Mary Wight and Sarah Norbury. It is not clear if he visits the pair separately or together. I have assumed the latter due to the family relationship between Wight and Norbury (they are sisters). It seems likely, therefore, that Sam went to visit Aunt Wight and found that Aunt Norbury was there too.

Pepys-Map : 18th-20th October 1661

Three new entries mapped today with one new concept added.

The diary entry for 18th October gives details of Pepys' self-treatment for his swollen groin. To model this I have created a new type of event, "medication-event" which should typically have role players "patient", "applied-by" (not necessarily a doctor, as in this case) and "medication". I have created a subclass of medication "poultice" to cover this particular treatment, and then made an instance of this class ("bran and vinegar poultice"). The entry for the diary event is:

[event-16611018-06 : medication-event
= "Samuel applies a poultice to his tumor (18th October 1661)";"16611018-06"]
occurs(event-16611018-06 : event, today : on)
participation(event-16611018-06 : event,
  samuel-pepys : patient,
  samuel-pepys : applied-by,
  bran-poultice : medication)
[bran-poultice : poultice = "A poultice of bran and vinegar"]
{bran-poultice, description,
[[...a poultice of a good handful of bran with half a pint of vinegar and a pint of
water boiled till it be thick, and then a spoonful of honey put to it and so spread
in a cloth and laid to it]] } / samuel-pepys

Note: the definitions for the medication-event topic type and the patient and applied-by role types are contained in the pepys-diary-ontology.ltm file. The definitions for the medication topic type and the poultice topic type are in the pepys-diary-culture.ltm file.

Pepys-Map : 12th - 17th October

A batch update of missed posts from this week, though most of the entries were quite short. A few new people an places have been introduced. One interesting example is that of "The Exchequer" which, like many government functions is the name of both a building and an institution. To avoid the Topic Naming Constraint which requires that two topics with the same name in the same scope get merged, the building and institution are modelled as follows:

[exchequer-institution : institution = "The Exchequer (institution)";"Exchequer, The;institution"
  = "The Exchequer" / institution
  @"http://www.pepysdiary.com/p/290.php"]
[exchequer-building : building
  = "The Exchequer (building)";"Exchequer, The;building"

Pepys-Map : 11th October 1661

A very short entry today as Pepys is suffering from a 'bruise' which keeps him in bed all day. The only event is the arrival of his brother Thomas, cousin Thomas and John Snow (a relative by marriage) for dinner which Pepys himself is not able to attend.

However, I seem to have inadvertently censored Pepys illness from yesterdays topicmap (possibly because the thought of a 'late bruise in one of my testicles' is just a bit too painful). So that has been added, with 10th October recorded as the start date.

Pepys-Map : 8th - 10th October 1661

Posted entries for 8th 9th and 10th October today. Most of the modelling is straightforward. The only new addition is a "repairing-event" which is used to model the occassion on 9th when Samuel puts his theboro (an instrument) in to be repaired.

Pepys-Map : 6th-7th October 1661

Two more entries posted today. In the entry for 6th October, the modelling is fairly simple for the following events:
  • Samuel goes to the service at St. Olave's
  • Samuel dines at home
  • Samuel goes to the service at St. Gregory's by St. Pauls
  • Sam visits Martha Batten
  • William Penn calls on Martha Batten during Samuel's visit.
  • William Penn and Martha Batten dine as guests of Samuel.
For 7th October the modelling is also fairly simple:
  • Samuel goes to Thomas Fenner's house - his intention is to meet with Margaret Kite, but she does not turn up, hence this is only a travelling-event.
  • Samuel visits Dr. Williams to find him ill. The illness is modelled as a separate event starting at some point on or before this day.
  • Samuel receives a letter about the legal wranglings over the lease-hold of Sturtlow. To link this event with a previous related event in which the lease hold was sold to William Luffe, I have created a topic for the leasehold with a subject indicator and edited the topic map for 21st July 1661 to add that subject indicator to the topic representing the leasehold in the appropriate event. Now when the two maps are merged we find that this letter is about the leasehold that was sold on 21st July.

Pepys-Map : 4th-5th October 1661

Two more entries posted today.

The topic map for 4th October makes use of the same merging principles used in the topic map for 3rd October to refer back to the loan of 50 pounds agreed on that day - today, the money is received by Samuel's apprentice, Will Hewer. To make it easier to model the transaction, I have introduced a topic specifically for the 50 pounds borrowed from Mr Battersby. So I have updated the borrowing-event in the topic map for 3rd October to show the 50 pounds as the "borrowed item", and have also shown it in the topic map for 4th October as the "delivered item" received by Will Hewer.

The topic map for 5th October is more straightforward. I have chosen to model Samuel's efforts to hang a model ship in his room simply as "work"...should there be a speciailised "DIY" event type I wonder :-)

Pepys-Map : 3rd October 1661

Today's entry makes use of topic map merging to handle a reference to a previous event.

The event in question is a disucssion of the performance of Vittoria Corombona that took place on 2nd October. To make a reference to the performance event, I have simply created a topic whose subject identifier is the address of the topic created for the performance event. The reference is made using a relative URI and it assumes that the topic map for 2nd October is located in the same directory as that for 3rd October (which is the case for the archived LTM files). The result is the following LTM code:

[event-16611002-05-ref @"16611002.ltm#event-16611002-05"]

I have also made an editorial pass through the topic types defined in the core ontology file today, creating sort names that omit the indefinite article to improve the sorting in displays like Omnigator and TM4Web.

This can then be used as any other event topic. For example, we discover today that Elizabeth Batten and her son had been at the same performance. We can model this as:

[event-16611002-05-ref @"16611002.ltm#event-16611002-05"]
participation(event-16611002-05-ref : event,
  william-batten-son : audience,
  elizabeth-batten : audience)

We can also use the event as the subject of the discussion event that takes place today:

[event-16611003-09 : discussion
= "Samuel discusses yesterday's performance of
'Vittoria Corombona' with the Battens (3rd October 1661)";"16611003-09"]
...
event-subject(event-16611003-09 : event, event-16611002-05-ref : subject)

Pepys-Map : 1st-2nd October 1661

Two short entries posted today.

In the entry for 1st October, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel and Elizabeth have a discussion about music and about singing lessons for Elizabeth.
  • Theodore Goodgroome arrives and Samuel and Elizabeth have a singing lesson with him.
  • Samuel works at the Navy Office
  • Samuel works on his papers at home.
  • Samuel has supper of bread and cheese.

For the 2nd October the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel, Thomas Fenner and Margaret Kite spend the morning appraising Margaret's inheritance.
  • The trio go to a cookshop on Bishopsgate Street for dinner.
  • Samuel buys some sack wine for Thomas Fenner and Margaret Kite at an unamed tavern. The diary does not say if the three of them drank anything there.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth take a coach to the Theatre Royal.
  • A performance of John Webster's play 'Vittoria Corombona' or 'The White Devil' at the Theatre Royal.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth take a coach home from the theatre.

Pepys-Map : 29th-30th September 1661

The entry for 29th September is quite simple. With just four events: Samuel going to church (twice), a dinner hosted by the Pepys' and a supper hosted by the Penns.

The entry for 30th September is quite long. I have chosen to focus only on Samuel's own actions rather than the detail of the battle between the French and the Spanish, so the battle itself is referred to only by a single event using a new type 'conflict".

The rest of the days events are principally movements from one place to another, all modelled as travelling events. Samuel's first event of the day was to travel to Whitehall to meet Henry Moore, who did not turn up - hence that is modelled as a travelling-event rather than a meeting-event. Where possible in the rest of the days movements I have recorded the (approximate) start and end points and the mode of travel for each move.
